Trade Preferences For Apparel 101: Preferences In Major Eastern Asian Markets

Register for this event

When:

Tue May 10 13:00:00 PDT 2011

Description:

Currently, there are more than 30 free trade agreements, trade preference programs and other similar arrangements in operation in East Asia, and that number is expected to continue to rise in the years ahead as World Trade Organization members struggle to reach a consensus on the Doha Round of multilateral negotiations.

Many of these trade arrangements provide substantial benefits to apparel, including duty-free access and rules of origin that in certain cases are more flexible than those included in U.S. free trade agreements. It is imperative for apparel companies with global sourcing strategies, as well as first-time or occasional exporters to major East Asian markets, to understand the provisions included in these FTAs and preference programs in order to successfully maximize their overall duty savings and increase their profit margins.

This 1-hour webinar will review the key apparel provisions included in the more significant and widely-used trade arrangements in China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, including:

• Japan's Generalized System of Preferences;
• China's preferences for least developed countries;
• South Korea's preferences for least developed countries;
• The China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement;
• The Japan-ASEAN Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement;
• Taiwan's preferences for Central American apparel; and
• The South Korea-ASEAN FTA.

This webinar will be presented by Alvaro Ferreira of Sandler, Travis & Rosenberg, P.A. Mr. Ferreira is an economist and international trade advisor who counsels foreign governments, trade associations and multinational corporations in Latin America, the United States and Asia on a wide variety of economic, commercial, regulatory and international trade matters.

Mr. Ferreira has advised clients on preferential and non-preferential tariff treatment for apparel in a range of markets, including the EU, United States, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, Colombia, Dominican Republic, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Mr. Ferreira holds a Master's degree in International Affairs from The George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Government from Lafayette College. A national of Spain, he is bilingual in Spanish and English, and fluent in French.
